Last week I was delighted to catch up with the Home Secretary Priti Patel, and hear her plans to increase police numbers.
On the doorstep in Twickenham people often bring up crime and fear of crime. People want to see more officers in their neighbourhoods with the powers they need to protect the public and cut crime – which is why Priti is extending police powers to stop and search, and reviewing sentences for serious criminals.
I’m also really glad to hear the policy on international students staying in the UK once they have finished their studies. They are once again to be offered a two-year work visa after graduating from a British university.
Currently, graduates with bachelors or master’s degrees are allowed to look for work for only four months. From next year all international graduates could qualify for a two-year period to work in the UK, increasing their chances of finding long-term employment after studying.
